The programmable buttons can be set to macro basically anything you'd like on the more sophisticated models. For something that's fully configurable and covered in little mechanical buttons, that will be periodically dropped not the floor and get greasy from grubby hands and maybe even have a drink or 2 spilled on it, that's pretty impressive. The xbox 360 harmony I started with lasted me I believe 4 years before some of the buttons started to die, and I got it second hand from a friend who used it for a couple years before that. And when it eventually dies it just pops out and a new one goes in, no trouble. I haven't even had to replace the rechargeable battery in the harmony one since I got it quite a few years ago, still charges and runs fine for days (we usually remember to put it on the cradle when we go to bed). They're pretty bullet proof for something so potentially fragile. ![]() Get through the setup and configuration period and you'll love the remote itself. The biggest thing is just that the remotes are so nice that the setup software being so crap (and being the first thing you have to use) is very off putting. Once it's all set (which will take a while, lots of fiddling to get everything just right) you basically don't have to touch it again so ultimately it doesn't matter. It does however work, and you need it ONLY for setup and changing your configuration on the remote. just really crappy design that leads to a clunky experience). Not un-usable, but slow and convoluted (it uses and embedded web interface and requires you to log into their service for your settings and such. The logitech software has always been pretty crap.I do have a keyboard with a trackpad (cheap logitech thing, it's actually great for the couch, has a mouse button on the left side to make holding & track padding easier, and reasonable key feel, much better than the chinese designed super super cheap stuff that I've also used), but that's for doing stuff on the mini outside of kodi. Anywhere with text input in kodi has an on screen keyboard, and they are used so infrequently (YMMV depending on add ons and usage habits) that it's never been an issue for me. You can likely set up custom buttons to act as a keyboard but I have never bothered. ![]() The newer bluetooth wifi everything and the kitchen sink remote and base station thing might be able to communicate with a different interface, but IR works (even if it's through a blaster or something else). You will need an IR receiver most likely (the mini has one built in).who hate learning new stuff just to watch something, and who like using multiple remotes even if you don't mind learning. If you set it all up right anyone can use everything you have with 1 remote.I have used a harmony remote (xbox 360 harmony remote until it died and a harmony one since then) for years to control everything in my media center, including xbmc (now kodi) running on a mac mini.
